How Often Does My Clock Need Servicing?
 |
If your clock is to give good service and last for
generations, it should be oiled every couple of years and cleaned every 5-7 years. This estimate depends upon
the clock's environment: is it dusty, smoky or exposed to widely varying
temperature or humidity, does it run everyday? Certainly, 10 years is the
absolute maximum any running clock should go without service. |
 |
In order to properly clean any watch or clock, it must
be thoroughly disassembled. Otherwise, the cleaning process will be harmful to
the timepiece by loosening and trapping dirt between the assembled gears. The
resultant wear makes it a false economy to shortcut the cleaning process.
Never allow anyone to "dunk and swish" your assembled clock or watch movement.
Also, it voids your clock's warranty. |
 |
It is a natural occurrence: clocks must be adequately
oiled to run properly, but oil attracts and collects dirt particles. Clock
gears are under tremendous force, and any collection of grit will gradually
wear out the clock. Routine maintenance will save expensive major overhauls or
clock replacement. |
